Here are a few things that helped me stay alive. First thing when you have incoming fire, don't panic. Try and figure out what kind of attack it is. Identify how long it has been since the last time you logged in, Valor will tell you when you open the world you play in. Any incoming attack you can safely guess that the troop walk is no longer then the X hours it has left to land plus the Y hours you've been off doing whatever.
Go into the rally point and view the attack details, first things first, pretend you are sending a scout to the city that's attacking you. If the length of time is longer then how long your scout takes to get to him, try a lancer, go through till you are reasonably sure you know what kind it is. Only notify your crown if your guild is not in a war - if your guild is fighting then your leadership is well aware and a post in the forum is all you need. In your post BB Code the person's name, the city location you require support to and the Valor Time the attacks land. (01:01:01 vt)
Scouts
If it's a scout, post the vital info in your guilds war forum. Notify your crown if the attacker is in a guild. Fortify your wall, and log on periodically to see if more waves are sent. *Remember* Scouts kill scouts, it is better that your attacker is BLIND - if you are reasonably sure that the incoming wave is scouts, support your city with scouts so your attacker does not get a report. Only one scout needs to survive in order for your attacker to receive a report so make sure you stack your city. 300 to 500 should be sufficient, but the more you can send, or have your mates send, the better. With the introduction to the purchasable "instant scout" they may purchase a look at your city. You are NOT given a report that they have done so, so I always assume if I kill incoming scouts, that is my attacker's next move. I personally think that this is a purchasable advantage and takes away from the strategy of the game, but just like real life, anyone can rule the world if they can afford to buy the domination.
Clearing Crew (CC)
If it is just troops, or commonly called a "Clearing Crew" or "CC", means no rams, ballistas or scholars. Post in the war forum, notify crown if atkr is in guild, fortify wall spend as many resources as possible, even on troops you don't want, you can always cancel training after he hits and 5 min before his wave lands send your troops out to farm a barbie. This is known as dodging a wave. This wastes your attacker's time, and gives you the upper hand. You now know what kind of home grown troops are in his city. If he has sent a NUKE at you, you know that the city is mainly attack, and he will not have many, if any, defense troops home grown. He will have to import support if you attack. Its smart to view his city on the map and determine how far away his support is, ie his other cities, or guildmates. Any guild mates of his you can determine - reasonably - how active they are by their kingdom size. Gauge their size to your own, also look at their kill score, if they have a high defender score, perhaps they've lost cities in war, so keep that in mind when you are guessing their activity level.
The decision to defend against the clearing crew depends on your confidence in your troop count. If you have been at war long, you may not have many troops to spare and dodging is a viable option. You also may want to dodge just to see what your attacker has, you can always turn around and attack him to kill his troops. Kill score is kill score, no matter if it is Kill Score Attack, or Kill Score Defence, but most brag about their ksa... and rightfully so ;)
Siege Weapons
If it is rams or ballistas - post and seek support troops, notify your crown, use up your resources, fortify wall and send any scholars out to a safe guild mate as support.
If it is scholars - post and seek assistance, notify crown, fortify wall, use resources, send any scholars to a friend for safe keeping. I typically dodge the first two scholar attacks, until support gets there. If you kill wave 3 or 4 (if its a scholar train) you'll have successfully stalled your attacker until support arrives typically - posting in the guild asap will speed the relief. You can also seek to be put in chaos. More on that HERE.
Don'ts
Don't send your troops to attack ur atkr bcs ur upset he's attacking you. It's better to have a plan then loose all your troops bcs you went off half cocked.
Don't send nasty v-mails - that's the crowns job :) If you are not a jerk your crown can do more for you.
Don't leave pleas for help in your forum and not leave any details. I don't bother asking for more info anymore, if you can't be bothered supplying the necessary info then I can't be bothered sending you support troops.
Don't attack someone unprovoked then seek assistance from your guild mates when they attack you back. Assume if you attack some one they will hit you back and don't be a pussy about it.
